Key takeaways
- The Ford Edge is one of the safest cars on the market, making it the perfect daily driver.
- If you’re a handyman who likes to be self-sufficient, but don’t want to miss out on picking your kids up from sports, then the Edge is for you since it can tow 3,500-pounds.
- The first generation Sport trim was feisty thanks to the addition of the Mustang engine into this trim.
First Generation (2007-2014)
When this model first hit the roads, it came in 3 trims. The trims were the SE, SEL, and SEL Plus. It wasn’t until 2009 that the Sport trim joined the lineup.
While the SE was barebones, not really coming with much that made it a must have. The SEL came with some features that reflected the times. This came with a six-disc in-dash CD player, leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The SEL Plus, the lineup topper, came with great features. These were seats that were leather-trimmed, 18-inch chrome-clad wheels and dual-zone climate control.
When the Sport trim hit the market, it had to be better than the SEL Plus, so it came with even more features. These were seats that were leather-trimmed with faux-suede inserts and as the sporty trim, it came with large-diameter chrome exhaust tips and 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, with optional 22-inch wheels.
The Sport also included the 3.7L V6 that the Mustang had, giving this SUV some power in ways that the other trims couldn’t replicate. This engine had 305 horsepower, making it a formidable option for those who may want something fun.
During its debut, the Edge was recognized as one of the “Best Cars for Families” in 2007 by AAA and Parents Magazine. The IIHS gave models built after 2007 a Top Safety Pick, showing just how safe, and influential this model was immediately.
Second Generation (2015-2022)
This generation came with some modern features that we know today. The first update to the Edge was more interior room, making for a more comfortable ride. The Edge also saw the addition of a rear-view camera. This generation also saw the addition of the new 2.0L EcoBoost engine. This engine was capable of towing 3,500 pounds.
When 2019 hit the market, it saw a facelift that brought some new looks, as well as gear. The new gear is a 12-speaker B&O surround-sound system, this replaces the Sony system from the years prior. The new Ford 8F35 eight-speed automatic transmission came to the lineup. This came with automatic stop-start tech that helped improve fuel economy, as well as 5 more horsepower. This helps save you time, and money while on family road trips, or late nights with your kids.
Some new safety features also joined this year. These were post-collision braking, evasive steering assist, and adaptive cruise control. Thanks to these updates, the Edge received Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, and a five star safety rating from the NHTSA.
2020 and 2021 saw the last updates before the new generation. This was the introduction of the dual-zone automatic climate control, and the removal of the CD player, in 2020. While in 2021, the Edge came with a new standard 12-inch trim that came with wireless phone connectivity, and a new ST-Line trim.
In 2024, the second generation of the Edge came to an end, and there was no successor in sight.
